Sticks and Stones

Words Hurt tooEver heard the saying “sticks and stones can break my bones, but word can never hurt me”? Well who ever wrote this was obviously a boy because in a teenage girls world words hurt more than any physical pain. One of the hardest things girls have to deal with is other girls being catty or just plain mean. “Cat fights” or girls fights are sometimes a lot worse than any brawl that boys get into. The truth is, though you do not realize it, sometimes even the smallest remark can greatly affect someone. Even though some people may act like they are impenetrable they really are  affected by the smallest remarks, like “you should wear more makeup” or “you look weird”. It may seem stupid, but little things like this greatly affect girls self esteem. The girls that don’t seem to be affected by anything you say and criticizes everyone else usually are the ones who are the most insecure. Just because you do not think something your saying is offensive does not mean it’s not to someone else. Also remember, before you criticize what someone else is doing, make sure that your following your own advice. One of the worst things someone can do is say one thing and do something else. You can only expect what you put out. Do not get upset that someone is doing something if your doing the exact same thing to them. If you use a tone or have an attitude expect to get the same thing back. When you were little your parents used to always tell you “Treat others how you want to be treated”, well actually its true. You can not have an attitude and expect that the person is going to have a sweet reply. Just because your older than someone, you are more popular, or you have more money doesn’t by any means make you better then them and most certainly doesn’t mean you own them in any way. Here are some rules that are good to remember and follow:

-you get what you put out

-If you ask a stupid expect a stupid reply

-Dont say anything that you think could offend someone and if you do expect the are going to reply with something offensive

- Dont have an attitude unless you want people to have an attitude with you

- Always give your self time to think before freaking out at anyone

- Do not accuse any one of anything unless you know the whole story

- 90% of fights are caused by spur of the moment reactions, So think BEFORE you talk

-NO ONE owns you or has the right to put you down

-NEVER do anything that you don’t feel comfortable with, no matter who says to do it

- Most importantly of all words are the worst kind of scars because they are permanent

If you follow these rules you will be a lot less likely to have problems or cause anyone to get upset. Next time you go to say something that is not “nice” or use an attitude even if someone else started it think about it for a minute and consider wether or not its really worth it.

Skin and Bones

Is this what you see? Wow! She is so thin, I wish I looked like that. Ever find your self thinking that? The truth is however, you probably do not want to look like that, because she may look perfect and skinny on the outside, but inside she is dying. Many girls suffer from what is one of the biggest teen killers in the United States, eating disorders. Many people think that really the only dangerous eating disorder is bulimia or making yourself throw up after eating, but there are many other eating disorders that are just as deadly. Other major eating disorders include anorexia nervosa (starving yourself), and anorexia athletica (extreme over exercise). All of these eating disorder are extremely dangerous and can lead to long term problems. There are many bad short term and long term affects of eating disorders.

Bulimia has many scary and plain gross effects on the body. Bulimia causes cavities and gum infections and eventually your teeth fall out, because the stomach acids from throwing up erode your mouth. Bulimia effects your heart, brain, kidneys, digestive system, bones, skin and endocrine glands, basically almost all of your organs. Bulimia is even deadly. Thats right you can die from bulimia and for what to be thin. A great place to find out more about bulimia, its affects, and even some of the reasons people are bulimic is a blog called “Health in Hell”.

Another extremely dangerous eating disorder is anorexia. There are two different types of anorexia, nervosa and athletica. In anorexia nervosa the person basically starves them selves. They do not eat for long periods time and when they do eat it is something very small that really will not help there body. When someone has anorexia athletica they extremely over exercise. People who have anorexia athletica usually become obsessed with exercise and there weight. Many people who are anorexic see themselves as fat when in fact they are nothing but skin and bones. There are some extremely scary long term affects of anorexia which include kidney failure, loss of hair, yellow skin, amnesia, and even death. Anorexia is extremely dangerous and if someone is anorexic they NEED to get help.

In todays world girls are seeing models and actresses who are extremely thin. The truth is there are that they most likely have a some type of eating disorder. I find it scary that about 15 % of teen age girls have eating disorders. That is almost a forth of all teenage girls in the United states! Eating disorders are a very dangerous issue and any one who has one needs to get professional help. If your friend has an eating disorder talk to them about it; if they do not listen it is important to tell an adult, their lives may be at stake. The best way to avoid these scary affects of a eating disorder are to not have one. You are not to fat, do not compare your self to others because everyone ha different types of bodies. It is always nice to be thin, but it is not worth dying over.

Perfect

Your not a doll

Perfect, adjective meaning to be entirely without flaw or defect a.k.a. flawless; this is the definition of the word perfect in the dictionary, but what does perfect really mean? People use perfect to describe everything from a pair of shoes to a person, however I think perfect is not a realistic word. Though it is found in the dictionary, perfect does not accurately describe anything. The only purpose that the word perfect has in the english dictionary is to describe what we are not.

Many girls have a goal of being perfect, everyone wants to be one of the perfect people. The hard truth is that perfection is unachievable, no matter what no one and nothing will ever be perfect. You will always be a little to fat or a little to skinny, you are always gonna be a little to short or a little to tall, your hair will always be to straight or to curly, no matter what there will always be something wrong with how you look or how you sound. If you think you are perfect you are living a lie. I am not being mean i am telling the truth and truth is none of us are perfect. There are the popular pretty girls that always seem to be happy and never take a bad picture, but in reality they are not perfect, just like you, they hate something about themselves and they are striving for perfection even if it doesn’t show.

For so long we have been brain washed into thinking there is such thing as being perfect. When you flip through magazines you see a bunch beautiful models who have flawless skin and are super skinny, you probably think wow they are perfect, but this assumption is very wrong. There is a software that allows magazines to edit out all the imperfections of their models. Don’t believe me? Next time you open iphoto go to edit photo and you will see a little button labeled retouch, this button allows you to erase any blemishes on your skin, with the click of a mouse your skin can look perfect. It always seems your so close to perfection, but it is always just out of reach.

Right now is probably about the point when you are starting to think this doesn’t apply to me, because I don’t think I am perfect, I know I have flaws and I’m ok with that. Two weeks ago I would have probably said the same thing, but now I realize that the truth is every time you look in the mirror and think I wish I was skinnier or I wish I had a smaller nose, your striving for perfection. We all have flaws and those flaws are what make us all so great, our flaws are the things that make us so special and without them you would be plain. With out flaw we are ordinary, with them we are extraordinary. Next time you think if I just blue eyes or if I were just  3 inches taller I would be perfect, STOP and remember that the fact that you have brown eyes instead of blue eyes or that you are 5’4 instead of 5’7 is what makes you special. You can’t be perfect, but you can be special and thats what counts.
